Teacher Spotlight: Rachel Robinson

MHS Teacher Spotlight of the Week, Mrs. Robinson

I’m Rachel Robinson, formerly known as Miss. Park. I was married in April of 2019, in my first year of teaching. This is my third year at MHS and my second year as cross country coach.

I grew up in Clover, S.C. and journeyed to the low country for college. I graduated from College of Charleston in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Secondary Education. McCormick County School District faculty and staff won my heart in an interview at a job fair. After visiting the school and becoming friends with Ms. Stoner, I chose to begin my teaching career here; I haven’t looked back!

I didn’t choose the teaching profession; it chose me. I was originally a sociology major, but I came to the realization that I wanted to help students unlock opportunities through education. My purpose as an educator is to create a classroom with relevant, meaningful learning experiences. I teach because I want to foster a lifelong love of reading in my students as well as help them become empathetic, empowered, and culturally competent.

My high school English teacher, Precious Schumpert, has had some of the biggest impact on my teaching philosophy. As a student in her class, I was challenged to think introspectively and consider questions like “What is my purpose?” and “Why do I exist?” I love how literature and writing offer a place for students to consider who they are and their place in the world. Books can be a mirror to look at one's self more clearly or a window into another world.

Two of my other passions are running and mentoring young women. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to connect to these passions at work with the XC team and The Sisterhood Club.
