Retirement benefits decisions: You have 30 days from your date of hire to enroll in your retirement plan and designate beneficiaries for your retirement account. Your benefits administrator can guide you through the enrollment process once you have made your decisions, but here are some other resources that you may find helpful:

    • SCRS or State ORP
      • If you are a newly hired state, public school or higher education institution employee, you may choose between the South Carolina Retirement System (SCRS) and State Optional Retirement Program (State ORP). If you do not select your retirement plan within 30 days of your date of hire, you will automatically become a member of SCRS. Please review the following information before you make your retirement plan selection.
      • If you are a newly hired employee of a local subdivision of government that participate in the retirement plans PEBA administers, you are not eligible for State ORP participation and must join SCRS unless your position is exempted by state law. Your employer can tell you whether your position is exempt from mandatory membership.
    • PORS
      • The Police Officers Retirement System (PORS) is a defined benefit retirement plan PEBA administers primarily for public safety employees of state agencies, public and charter school districts, public higher education institutions and other local subdivisions of government that participate in PORS.
    • JSRS
      • The Judges and Solicitors Retirement System (JSRS) is a defined benefit retirement plan PEBA administers for South Carolina’s public justices, judges, solicitors, circuit public defenders and administrative law court judges.
